Scalp psoriasis is a skin disorder that causes red patches, called plaques, to form on the scalp. The patches are accompanied by itching, irritation, inflammation, and flaking. The cause of scalp psoriasis is not known, but it is believed to be the result of an autoimmune disorder. The immune system targets patches of skin cells in the scalp and sends white blood cells to the patches of scalp. This causes a buildup of skin cells, which causes a raised patch of skin on the scalp. The actions of the white blood cells also cause inflammation and irritation of the patches. Scalp psoriasis can sometimes lead to hair loss. This can occur either due to the plaques coming off and bringing hair with it or from scratching.
